The Fifth Annual Black Girl Magic Conference, which will host 600 Black girls in fourth through eighth grade from Madison, Oregon and Middleton school districts, is back as an in-person event on May 26 at Madison College’s Truax Campus.

The annual conference encourages young Black women to connect with local Black women leaders and to inspire and uplift one another. This year’s theme is “Homecoming” and, according to the organizers, is “calling us together in person to celebrate the brilliance of Black girls after hosting the event virtually for two years due to the pandemic.”

“Our girls can’t wait to reconnect with each other,” said Rosa Thompson, Black Girl Magic Conference founder, in a statement. “That’s why this is truly a homecoming – because our students have been anticipating the return of this celebration. We’re bringing back that much-needed space that boosts our girls’ confidence and affirms their pride in their culture and capabilities.”

The Black Girl Magic Conference started in 2018 with 80 students. The event has grown each year and this year 600 girls will unite for a day-long retreat featuring a morning fitness class to energize the girls when they arrive, dynamic breakout sessions led by industry leaders, community partners and entrepreneurs and a lively DJ spinning all the popular tunes.

This year’s keynote speaker will be Kheris Rogers (above), an entrepreneur, fashion designer and CEO of the widely popular brand, Flexin’ In My Complexion. Born in Los Angeles, Kheris started her brand after years of being bullied in school because of her dark skin complexion.

Her story has been televised by NBC, CBS, and The Steve Harvey Show; and celebrities including Whoopi Goldberg, Lupita N’yongo and Alicia Keys have all sported styles from Kheris’ clothing line.
